About the Playwright

This production marks Quiara Alegría Hudes' 2nd play produced at New Theatre after the critically acclaimed Elliot, A Soldier's Fugue in 2006 and she wrote the book for the musical In the Heights, both finalists for the Pulitzer Prize in Drama. In the Heights, which continues its run on Broadway, has just launched a national tour, and is the recipient of the 2008 Tony Award for Best Musical. Other plays include 26 Miles (Alliance Theatre) and book and lyrics for Barrio Grrrl! (Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts). She is a resident writer for New Dramatists, is the Aetna New Voices Fellow at Hartford Stage, Joyce Fellow and is currently writing a new play, Water By the Spoonful, and the screenplay of In the Heights for Universal Pictures. She lives in New York with her husband and daughter.

Jackie RiveraJackie Rivera (Olivia) is a recent graduate of New World School of the Arts, receiving a BFA in Acting. She was last seen at New Theatre as Bianca in Taming of the Shrew, and this past summer in Lili Bita's Women of Fire and Blood. Other credits include: Trafalgar Gower in Trelawney of the Wells, Nancy Blake in The Women, Collette in Four Dogs and a Bone, and The Herald in Marat/Sade. She recently ventured into film, Past the Fields, slated as an entry into the Sundance Film Fest in 2011. She would like to thank Ricky and Eileen for having so much faith in her to offer her this part, she is honored to have this opportunity. Thank you!! She would also like to dedicate this performance to her family, and all of their Boricua goodness. Mucho amor y que disfruten la obra!

Evelyn PerezEvelyn Perez (Beatriz) is a native of Miami. She received a BFA from FIU. For the last 15 years she has performed locally in various productions. Among her film projects are a short film that was given recognition by Project Greenlight, another that was screened in The Los Angeles Film Festival, and a very brief video promoting Senator Clinton. The latter was runner up to an actual campaign video that aired nationally. Ms. Perez has also appeared in a number of commercials for Hispanic audiences in Latin America. This performance will mark her third appearance at New Theatre. Her prior performances were in Elliot: A Soldiers Fugue and For Better.

Derek WarrinerDerek Warriner (Aaron) was born and raised in Dallas, Texas and earned a BS in Finance from Santa Clara University. South Florida theater credits include Children of a Lesser God (James Leeds) at the Miami Stage Company, Tracers (Little John) at the Juggernaut Theater, Barefoot in the Park (Paul) at the Broward Stage Door, and The Fifth of July (Jed) at the Public Theater. He can be seen in numerous independent films, as well as regional and national commercials. Derek would like to thank his friend and acting mentor, Ricky J. Martinez, for this wonderful opportunity, and his Mother for her abiding fandom and interminable support. Derek would also like to acknowledge the sanctity of the Continuing Escalation...

Christopher VicchiolloChristopher Vicchiollo (Manuel) is thrilled to be doing a Quiara Alegria Hudes piece for the second time. It has been 16 years for Chris in the South Florida theatre community; and three years since Chris began this grand journey with New Theatre that has led him here and continues to lead him down the path toward a brighter artistic future. Outside of the many Shakepeare summer productions in which he has performed at New Theatre (Julius Caesar, As You Like It and, most recently, Taming of the Shrew); he is most proud of the original productions which have helped to facilitate the development of his craft. (Elliot: A Soldier's Fugue (the other Quiara play), For Better and, although not original Glass Menagerie.) Watch for Chris in the next play in New Theatre's Season, Hour of the Tiger. Chris hopes, both, that you will enjoy this performance and that you continue to support the arts in any way you can. Because, without the arts, not only the artist suffers; WE ALL DO!

Ricky J. MartinezRicky J. Martinez (Director) is New Theatre's Artistic Director. New Theatre audiences witnessed Martinez's direction recently in In Development, Mauritius, The Glass Menagerie, Kissing, The Gates of Choice, The Rant, The Mission, A Nervous Smile, For Better... , and Likeness. He has also directed previous season's Melt, Sin Full Heaven, Just a Kiss, Elliot: A Soldier's Fugue, Lincolnesque, Madagascar, Paradise, Day of Reckoning and the three short plays for New Theatre's annual fundraiser event, Miami Stories. Some of his directorial credits in South Florida includes: Bump, Retch, One More Cloudy Day, Jack, the Bitter Tears of Petra van Kant, The Stronger, and he has staged some of his own multi-media productions such as Postlude 1, .EPAR, Concerning Phaedra, Snow and ED.L for Coral Castle. Younger audiences have seen his work as director and choreographer on Captain Nemo, Narnia, Scrooge, Anne of Green Gables, Ferdinand the Bull, The Secret Garden at Actor's Playhouse and Hollywood Playhouse, the latter of which he was the Artistic Director for Imagination Theatre's for Young Audiences. Other credits included on the Staff page.

Dana Hesch (Production Stage Manager) is excited to be continuing the season with New Theatre. A Miami native, Dana has worked in New York as an Assistant Stage Manager: Outside Inn (International Cultural Lab), R-E-S-P-E-C-T, Callies Tally and The Boy Who Heard Music (New York Stage & Film) and as a Production Intern for Aurora Productions (Shrek The Musical, God Of Carnage, Mary Stuart and Blithe Spirit). In South Florida Dana has worked with City Theatre's Summer Shorts and at Actors Playhouse (Narnia! The Musical). Dana received her BFA in Drama/Stage Management from Carnegie Mellon University. Thanks to her family and friends for their support!
